SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan --- Some 20,000 alumni and balikbayans who graduated from the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) here will converge on February 8, 2008 when the university celebrates its 50th Golden Anniversary and Grand Alumni Homecoming.
Dr. Angelo B. Juan, VMUF alumni relations director and overall chairman of the activity, expressed optimism that hundreds of graduates who are now employed abroad will come home to attend the university reunion.
Juan said the graduates will be coming from the different regions in the world, including USA, Canada, Europe, Middle East and Asian countries. He expects hundreds of graduates because of the enthusiastic response of alumni abroad.
The VMUF will be 50 years old come February 2008. It was founded in 1958 by the late educators and trailblazing couple, Dr. Martin P. Posadas and Dr. Rosalina Quebral-Posadas. The school continues to scale greater heights of success including national, regional and local sports and academic competitions.
Originally planned as a 10-bed medical and dental clinic in 1951, the VMUF, famous as the non-stock, non-profit, non-sectarian Catholic Virgen Milagrosa Educational Institution (VMEI), has gone a long way to become one of the country’s premier medical, educational and sports centers.
It is one of the fastest growing universities in the Far East today strategically located in the heart of San Carlos City in Pangasinan about 200 kilometers north of Manila. It was named after the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, the patroness of the Virgen Milagrosa Complex.
The institution’s founders nurtured the institution from just a vision for a 20-hectare school located in the heart of the city to its present stature, turning it into a university with state-of-the art facilities.
Dr. Juan said that one of the highlights of this affair is a Ballroom Dancing Party and evening surprises to be led by university officials headed by Dr. Ma. Lilia P. Juan, university president. Other activities include a Holy Mass, a motorcade parade, an exhibition by the famous VMUF-Drum and Bugle Corps, floral offering to the tomb of VMUF Founders, fireworks display, parlor games, buffet luncheon picnic and raffle draw.
Couple Angelo and Ma. Lilia Juan, now vice president for administration and president, respectively, were classmates at the VMUF-College of Medicine Class 1979. The first 21 medical graduates had a very outstanding performance in the board examinations when all of them passed (100 percent).
VMUF graduates are invited to visit the website at http://www.vmuf.edu.ph or email at vmuf50years@yahoo.com.
Dr. Juan cited former Congressman Generoso DC. Tulagan of the third district of Pangasinan and San Carlos City (Pangasinan) Mayor Julier C. Resuello as proud graduates of the VMUF. He expects a 100 percent attendance by graduates who are working in the government service in the homecoming. He said that most of the city’s key positions in the government and owners-employers of big private hospitals and companies here and abroad are graduates of the VMUF.
He cited other VMUF graduates, namely, Infanta (Pangasinan) Mayor Dr. Melchor Mallari; Basista (Pangasinan) Mayor Dr. Raul De Guzman; Dr. Jackson Soriano, chief of the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital; Police Senior Superintendent Alejandro M. Valerio; Dr. Roland Cortez; Dr. Winston Go; San Carlos City (Pangasinan) Councilor Amelia P. Cayabyab; former San Carlos City (Pangasinan) Councilor Luisa F. Cayabyab; PMAyer-PAF Captain Alfredo E. Vicente II; Dr. Hubert Fernandez, among others.
Mayor Resuello hailed the VMUF graduates for their continuous support and countless contributions to their school and to the city in particular. The mayor also urged them to remain united and to support the city government initiatives and undertakings in its development thrust towards progress, growth and prosperity.
