Mannerisms: Gian Romano takes aerial inspiration for his latest collection
spacer

Rey G. Panaligan

Not one to go with the trendy fashion flow, young designer Gian Romano sets his own path with highly conceptual and forward-thinking clothes.

Entitled “Surface Desolation,” Gian’s latest collection is a playful interpretation of the pulp adventure-style movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and its high-flying costumes. “The collection is inspired by paratroopers, parachutes and on how air circulates and air ventilation,” Gian shares.

With international design experiences from such institutions like London’s Central Saint Martins and New York’s ThreeAsfour design collective, Gian honed his aesthetics and craft—most notably his expertise in patternmaking and form—with high regard to the leading edge of fashion. This is evident in this collection wherein polarized influences and garment constructions came into one piece of clothing. Gian, whose basic design process stems from menswear, emphasized volume and shape through fitted jackets and skinny trousers as well as oversized shirts gathered and twisted to strike unusual silhouettes.

This dichotomy even extends to the materials he used like wool, knit, cotton twill, denim, jersey and nylon. The collection’s color palette revolved around black, white, gray and an accent red tint. For the silhouette and cut, Gian constructed the clothes in a “slim cut with displaced seams.” A combination of sportswear with severe tailoring references the designer’s principal design philosophy of intellectual garments with a hint of minimalism and unexpected twists. Also, the unusual pairing of textiles such as jersey and denim adds a layer of intrigue and the whimsical to the clothes.

“I don’t design for anyone in particular,” says Gian explaining his client base. “It is up to the person to relate himself into the clothing.” Indeed, his clothes have distinct personality and character not meant for the mainstream consumer. Carefully thought of and intellectually inspiring, Gian Romano’s clothes will set you apart from the rest.
