BACOLOD CITY — Members of the city council of San Carlos passed the Avian Influenza (AI) Prevention and Control Ordinance as a measure to protect the city and the entire province from this disease.
The ordinance aims to prevent entry of avian influenza in the city and in the province by creating San Carlos City Avian Influenza Task Force to oversee the implementation of rules and regulations mandated by the ordinance.
Marlin Pellejo-Sanogal, provincial information officer, said the ordinance was passed last Feb. 7.
"It is designed to prevent the entry of avian influenza in the city and in the province as well. The ordinance also aims at ensuring public safety and protecting the livestock industry and other related industries, and promoting health, safety and general welfare, particularly of San Carlos residents," Sanogal said.
The task force is headed by Mayor Eugenio Jose Lacson as chairman, with the Vice Mayor Gerardo Valamayor, Jr. as vice chairman.
Members of the task force include the City Veterinarian, City Health Officer, City Agriculturist, PNP chief, ABC president, two non-government organization representatives, city action officer and the president of the local poultry raisers association.
Sanogal said the ordinance is San Carlos’ response to the creation of the Negros Occidental Anti-Bird Flu Task Force created by the provincial government last year.
"It will further strengthen the anti-bird flu efforts and programs of Gov. Joseph Marañon," she said.
