KIDAPAWAN CITY — Cotabato Gov. Jesus Sacdalan has ordered the construction of a temporary dike in the Kabacan River to prevent the flooding of low-lying towns, such as President Roxas, Matalam, and Kabacan.
Barangay Binay, a rice-producing village in Magpet town, has been under water since last Friday when Kabacan River overflowed its banks due to continuous heavy rains.
Sacdalan, some members of the sangguniang panlalawigan of Cotabato and the provincial engineer visited Barangay Binay last Saturday to monitor and assess the situation in the Kabacan River, which threatens to swell further and and cause devastating floods in several villages, including the Poblacion of President Roxas.
Residents of Binay living near the river are thankful as the dike has been built.
They used large boulders left behind by past floods on the shallow river bed to build the temporary dike.
The temporary dike has stopped the flooding of rice farms on the river bank.
Two backhoes of the Cotabato provincial government have been dispatched by Provincial Engineer Peter Salac, and these were augmented with the equipment of the municipal government of President Roxas.
Governor Sacdalan instructed Salac to deploy additional heavy equipment to fast-track work on the temporary dike and clearing portions of the river bank.
Flooding is a common phenomenon in the Kabacan River during the rainy season.
But officials and residents of President Roxas are alarmed because the river has shifted from its natural path and is cutting its way through farms.
