Faith, Hope & Charity

DJ Mojo Jojo

The above virtues, which serve as my column’s title, have always been associated with the feminine – at least for my own personal schema.

Nurturing, mothering and passionate, they serve as inspiring qualities which both sexes can admire and seek to exhibit for themselves. Given that the month of March is generally known as "Women’s Month," today’s Mojo:lation’s focuses on a triumvirate of female personalities, in commemoration of this observance, that are doing their part as role models for the both men and women.

Hollywood ingénues pay it forward

With their influential status as stars on the silver screen, actors often put their celebrity to good use and two notable Hollywood leading ladies have done just that in the noble name of charity!

Drew Barrymore announced Monday she is donating $ 1 million to help fight hunger. The 33year-old "Charlie’s Angels" star who serves as a World Food Program ambassador will give the money to the World Food Program, a U.N. body that delivers millions of tons of food aid to more than 70 million people in about 80 countries.

According to statistics from Barrymore’s charity, there has been a 40 percent rise in commodity prices since the middle of last year, caused in part by skyrocketing energy costs and rising consumer demand in developing countries like India and China. While the Rome-based agency has an annual budget of about $ 3 billion, but it said it needs $ 500 million more this year than it anticipated to help feed the world’s poor because of the rising food and energy prices.

In a more off the wall example of actresses paying it forward, film starlet Scarlett Johansson is auctioning herself off on eBay in benefit of Oxfam America, an international development and relief agency which delivers development programs and emergency relief services, and also campaigns for change in global practices and policies that keep people in poverty.

The "Lost in Translation" star is offering the highest bidder a chance to spend the evening with her at the premiere of one of her movies. Johansson’s eBay package includes: two tickets to the premier of her upcoming summer flick He’s Just Not That Into You which also stars Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore and Ben Affleck, a chauffered car service to the premiere and their hair and makeup done by Prive, a pair of tickets to the world premiere of the movie in July in either Los Angeles or New York - and some one on one time with Johansson herself.

As of now, Johansson’s bidding is listed to end on March 12 2008 — and so far there have been a total of eight bids with the highest bid being $ 205.

PIA: Pinay In Action

On a local note, I had the pleasure of guesting Senator Pia Cayetano on my morning radio program to usher in "Women’s Month" in the Philippines. A celebrity in her own right (yes, you don’t have to be an actress to command the laud of others), Pia enjoined listeners to salute and highlight women this March through an all women’s expo and an all women’s run of different distances spearheaded by Pinay In Action.

Pinay In Action seeks to uplift the lives of the Filipina with the aim to empower women and girls in the Philippines by providing venues for a healthier lifestyle and tools and information for a better future.

The charismatic senator (who is a lawyer, mother, environmental activist, and professional tri-athlete), together with female Iron Man champion Ani de Leon, spoke about the expo. A one of a kind event, it will be held on March 9 at the NBC Tent from 7am-5pm and have key categories which focus on women’s issues such as: health, wellness, fitness, beauty, fashion and kids. There will also be booths that will showcase different facets of women varying from products, services and advocacies.

Highlighting the event will also be a Pinay In Action run/walk activity. Now on it’s 3rd year, the Pinay In Action all women’s run will include a 5k and 10k run that will start at 6 a.m. beside NBC tent and two fun runs.
