A five-point guide aimed at helping its members properly discern the different controversies raging in the country, including the scrapped NBN project, was released yesterday by the Philippine Council for Evangelical Churches (PCEC).
"The NBN affair is now a household concern for every Filipino. Following extensive prayer and consultation among evangelical leaders, the PCEC, by the grace and mercy of our Lord, prayerfully presents this counsel and guidance," PCEC national director Bishop Efraim Tendero said.
The guidelines, with corresponding Bible verses, entitled "Guidelines for the Evangelical community regarding the NBN and other controversies" are quoted here in full:
1. Pray for the truth to be revealed. Let us support the search for the whole truth. "You will know the truth and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32) Pray that "everything that is now hidden or secret will eventually be brought to light and made plain to all." (Mark 4:22 and Luke 8:17)
2. Condemn escalating corruption and greed.
We strongly condemn the unmitigated bribery, corruption, and greed in the government where such exist. These evils are absolutely contemptible in the light of abject poverty in our country. Those who are directly or indirectly involved in such wrongdoings should thus be strongly condemned and be held liable in accordance with law. Let us petition God to "bestow blessings of Deuteronomy 28" on the godly leaders and to "impose the chastisements of Deuteronomy 28" on unrepentant leaders who continue to choose to do wrong and violate God’s laws.
3. Support cleansing and purging of evil and wrong doers.
Let us pray that the guidance and courage from the Holy Spirit will be upon our government institutions so that truth will come out, the wicked will be punished, the godly will be lifted up, and that peace will be upon our land.
4. Uphold the rule of law with patience and vigilance.
Being zealous for the truth is of the spirit. Using illegal and immoral means is of the flesh. We are a civil and well-loved nation. We have worked hard and successfully established a constitutional democracy. Let us be discerning which media reports are facts and realities and which are merely opinions and possible fabrications. Let us pray we "may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that [we] may be able to discern…’ (Philippians 1:910).
5. Continue on as salt and light in times of confusion.
In spite of what is happening around us, the people of God need to be patient, vigilant and committed to do what is right and good. "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9). Pray for church and government leaders as they seek the Lord’s will for our nation.
