BACOLOD CITY — Stores and boutiques selling clothes and other garments also sold in so-called "ukay-ukay" stores and "warehouses" have closed shop.
And many other establishments in the garments business are considering shifting to other business lines because of the still growing preference for the very much cheaper but imported, quality clothes offered at the increasing number of “ukay-ukay” stores.
With the surge of surplus or second-hand goods, that are mostly garments, shoes, and bags, many departments that had already been established in recent years are being threatened by the still increasing sales trends in the "Ukay Market."
As observed here, people flock in droves into the ukay-ukay stores for selling really cheaper but more durable items, especially clothes, wherein some are really very slightly used.
Faced with the stiff competition, garment dealers here have employed many marketing strategies like discounted sales, but still the ukay-ukay items are very much cheaper.
The sidewalks along Gonzaga Street and Central market are almost occupied by the ukay-ukay vendors.
Shipments of their stocks from Cebu is weekly.
A shipment would cost them not less than P30,000.00 per pack or paldo, excluding freight and hauling expenses.
New stocks are opened every Monday and Thursday, and are sold out in four days, or less.
