LOS ANGELES — The first time Juan Manuel Marquez faced Filipino dynamo Manny Pacquiao in May 2004, he did not have the luxury of sparring with left-handers and that may have cost the Mexican a clear-cut victory.

"Now we have lefthanded sparring that we never had before," said Marquez during a teleconference call from the Romanza Gym in Mexico City, citing that in the runup to the first Pacquiao bout the promoter did not make good on promise to send left-handers.

"They said that they were sending some southpaw sparring and they never got to Mexico," said Marquez, whose World Boxing Council superfeatherweight crown will be on the line at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on March 15.

"Thanks to Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), because they sent them (to us)," said the 34-year-old Marquez, who was assisted in training by Nicaraguan Eusebio Osejo, Venezuelan Rafael Hernandez, and Japanese Norio Kimura.

Now that GBP has fulfilled its promise, Marquez said it only enhanced his chances of proving he was undeserving of the 12-round draw that the judges ruled.

"The only thing that we are cautious of and working on is Manny Pacquiao’s left hand," said Marquez, who describes Pacquiao’s trademark punch as "like a bullet, very powerful and very fast."

Marquez began training even before Christmas and made the assurance that he will never be caught offguard just like in the first round of the Pacquiao bout where he visited the deck thrice and was one clean punch away from being stopped.

"As you all know, he’s a very fast and very quick fighter, a very strong fighter. He has a strong punch and that’s all I worry about. I am prepared and I am ready for that. I have done a pretty good enough job in the gym conditioning that I think I am going to win. I have everything to give Manny Pacquiao."

Marquez is arriving from Mexico City at 4:55 p.m. on Saturday and media representatives from the US, Mexico, and the Philippines will welcome him at LAX Airport. He will be accompanied by trainer Nacho Beristain, adviser Jaime Quintana and doctors Miguel Duran and Plutarco Gatica.

Meanwhile, the 12,000-seat Events Center inside Mandalay Bay will be occupied come fight night according to one of the copromoters.

"Tickets are still available, very few tickets though, the $ 100 and $ 200 are sold out," said Richard Schaefer, who is Oscar De la Hoya’s right-hand man at GBP, which is staging the slambang show alongside Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

"There are a handful of $ 300 tickets left and a couple hundred of $ 400 and $ 600 tickets. So maybe all in all, four or five hundred tickets are left. Make your reservations. Go and grab these last remaining tickets."
