International World Day of Theater for Children and Young People
spacer

On March 20 every year since 2001, the World Day of Theater for Children and Young People has been celebrated by the international community of theater practitioners.

Through special performances, open rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, newspaper and magazine articles, the day hopes to draw public attention to the art of theater for children and young people.

While events are primarily organized by the International Association of Theater for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ), national centers may also organize national events but are enjoined to include information on the day’s history and importance to society, and the ASSITEJ as an international organization.

ASSITEJ International is a World Theater Network of Theater established in 1965 by a global alliance of professional theater for children and young people. It now links thousands of theaters, organizations, and individuals through national centers in more than 70 countries from Australia to Zimbabwe, Sweden to Brazil, Singapore to Canada, Iceland to Korea, Turkey to Mexico, Estonia to Kenya, and Japan to Ireland. It is headed by International President Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schneider.

There are new ways to make theater more appealing to the young audience – through breathtaking choreography, as a complex system of codes, or as inspirational theater from abroad. Theater can also touch on intercultural dialogues, national core cultures, about things people have in common, or about their differences, and how they master them in their daily life.

If the theater is to serve as an effective tool for shaping the minds of and educating our young audience to enable them to do things differently but more effectively, it should be capable of encouraging and influencing them toward a more positive approach to hurdling life’s endless challenges, to give them hope, and more importantly to make them aware and accept that they are the hope of this world.
