Former Philippine President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino has been diagnosed as having colon cancer arousing much concern and sadness.
But we are consoled by the firm and abiding faith in God that she and her family continue to manifest in this trying period, and we join them in prayer for Mrs. Aquino’s speedy and complete recovery.
President Aquino, 75, took over as the principal challenger to the presidency, after her husband, opposition leader Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. was gunned down on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport upon his return from exile in 1983. Three years later, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets, demanding justice for Ninoy. She was swept into power after the peaceful EDSA People Power Revolution, and held office in Malacañang until 1992.
Mrs. Aquino is an icon of democracy. She is known to have created a wave of pro-democracy movements all over the world and will forever hold a revered place in our country’s history.
As we convey our sincere prayers for her speedy and complete healing, we enjoin everyone to offer prayers, as well, for her family’s strength and courage in this difficult moment.
