When Doña Consuelo "Chito" P. Madrigal died at the age of 86 on March 24, 2008, the country lost a glamorous society figure who dedicated her life to numerous charities and projects that uplifted the lives of many Filipinos.
She was born to a life of privilege and a family with a distinguished name. In the 40s and 50s, she was among the country’s celebrated socialites. She became a favorite customer of the leading fashion designers, who enjoyed dressing her up with their latest creations.
But Chito Madrigal was not content at being a mere fashion plate. Although surrounded and sheltered by wealth, she was cognizant of the fact that beyond the glitzy soirees was a country languishing in poverty. She lent her name to numerous causes that included healthcare, poverty alleviation, education, and the arts. She hosted fund-raising events at her own home in Forbes Park. She gave opportunities to struggling young artists.
Yet she was one who never cared for attention or publicity. At times she allowed herself to bask in the limelight only if it would help the latest cause she was in. When she was already ill, she helped organize her last event, a fashion show that featured the iconic fashion mavens of yore. The lady behind the production had also made her final bow.
She still managed to see friends for lunch – friends who always raved about her generosity and loyalty. She was always there for you, they would say. She gave everything possible to friends and to the Philippine society.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. today, March 27, 2008 at the Santuario de San Antonio Church, Forbes Park, Makati City.
We extend our condolences and sympathies to the family of Doña Consuelo "Chito" P. Madrigal, husband Minister Manuel Collantes, and relatives, and together with them pray for the eternal repose of her soul.
May she rest in peace.
