RODRIGUEZ, Rizal — After a two-day standoff due to the alleged takeover by suspended Mayor Pedro Cuerpo and his supporters of the town hall, the municipal government is now operating, although not yet at full capacity.
Acting Mayor Jonas Cruz said that many of the employees have already reported for work despite the controversy plaging the municipal government.
An employee, who asked not to be identified, said that over 50 percent of the more than 500 employees of the town have already reported for work.
Several of the employees opted to stay in their homes because of fear, while others are waiting for the situation to go back to normal.
During last Monday’s incident, Mayor Cuerpo and some councilors, together with their supporters, stormed the municipal hall and succeeded in occupying the municipal building despite the presence of anti-riot policemen.
A scuffle between Cuerpo, some councilors and supporters, and the policemen and employees resulted in the shooting and wounding of two employees.
For their alleged involvement in the shooting, two of Cuerpo’s bodyguards were arrested.
Cruz said as a result of the scuffle, the glass door was broken and other properties were destroyed.
"Cuerpo is responsible for the incident as this would not have happened if he did not lead the group," Cruz said.
