Dyslexia, a learning disability, is often a hidden condition because it is difficult to spot unless you are familiar with its characteristics.
A person with dyslexia exhibits the following symptoms:
•Has difficulty learning to read
•Makes strange spelling mistakes
•Confuses letters such as b and d
•Mixes up letters in a word/words in a sentence
•Has poor sense of direction
•Confuses left and right
•Has difficulty with the math subjects
•Cannot fully understand what he or she reads
•Has difficulty remembering sequences
•Pays attention to everything
•Has difficulty coordinating movements and focusing on a task
•Lacks confidence and exhibits low self-esteem
No two dyslexics have the same needs. They learn differently but their difference brings with it a higher tendency to be innovative, creative, artistic and to offer novel solutions to their problems.
In 2005, there were 40,260 Filipino students identified to have learning
difficulties. This was according to a DepEd study for elementary and secondary children with special needs.
In the United States, studies show that an estimated one in five people has a reading disability. Up to 20 percent of people in the U.S. are said to have a reading disability and 85 percent of these have dyslexia. It’s not clear what causes dyslexia which vary in terms of severity, but some research say it is inherited. (www.wikipedia.org, www.kidshealth.org)
