LAOANG, Northern Samar — Rep. Emil L. Ong (KAMPI, 2nd district, Northern Samar) gave a reminder intended for government officials and employees not to disregard the authority of Congress to conduct an investigation in aid of legislation.
Rep. Ong, this recent privilege speech at the House of Representatives, said government officials and employees should not ignore this authority of Congress, particularly the Oversight Committee, to conduct its investigation on issues and concerns involving public interest.
Ong cited in his speech the alleged abuse of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) officials when it ejected and physically harmed a Taiwanese investor from continuing his golf course business after investing some P1.5 billion.
He said the investor was not given due process and no case was filed in court by the SBMA officials.
Worse, the SBMA also caused the auction of the golf course last April 20 he said.
"This incident will give a wrong signal to our future investors that their investments are secure in our country.
President Arroyo is doing her best to invite investors abroad to come and invest in our country, but here is an investor whose due process and human rights had been deprived.
This would destroy the reputation of this government and in complete disrespect of the power of Congress to conduct an investigation to come out with a proper legislation so that future disregard of due process and violation of human rights can be avoided," Ong said,
