BACOLOD CITY — Rice farmers in Bago City received 1,000 bags of high-yielding palay certified seeds under the "Palay Seed Subsidy Program" of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Bago City Mayor Ramon Torres turned over the seeds to City Agriculturist Emiliano Baylon.
Under the program, the farmers will pay only P440 per bag and the city government will subsidize the remaining cost of P760 per bag to cover the total of P1,200 per bag of 40 kilos.
The program aims to help farmers increase their palay production through the planting of high-yielding certified seeds to augment their family income and to make affordable to farmers varieties of certified seeds.
This will also help boost palay production.
The distribution of high-yielding palay seeds is being undertaken nationwide by the DA, in cooperation with local government units.
Aside from hybrid rice, the DA is also distributing yellow hybrid corn seeds.
This corn variety can help farmers increase their per hectare yield of between four and five metric tons.
The top producers of corn are the US and European countries. China’s best average per hectare is between four and five metric tons.
