"Pi7ong Tagpo" at Robinson’s indieSine May 14-20
"Pi7ong Tagpo," the independently-produced digital film, is scheduled for its first public screening at Robinson’s Galleria’s indieSine from May 14-20.
The experimental film marked a first in local cinema as it put together seven short digital films ranging from 18 to 20 minutes – all bound by a unifying theme and other elements that emphasize the Filipino’s unique cultural identity and positive virtues.
"Pi7ong Tagpo" boasts of a powerhouse production lineup, including acclaimed director and screenwriter Rahyan Carlos ("Pamahiin," "Shake Rattle & Roll 8," and many others), as well as multiawarded Directors of Photography Romy Vitug and Jun Aves.
Also featured is an eclectic lineup of mainstream cinema and theater veterans, including Diether Ocampo, Cherry Pie Picache, Bembol Roco, Karylle, LJ Reyes, Vaness del Moral, Sheena Halili, Vangie Labalan, Robert Seña, Isay Alvarez-Seña, Jake Macapagal, and child actors Krystal Reyes (of "Princess Charming" and "Mga Mata ni Angelita") and Steven Fermo (of "Goin’ Bulilit").
Produced by Creative Futures Inc., a progressive events production and management company, "Pi7ong Tagpo" premiered last Oct. 1, 2007 at the Centerstage, Mall of Asia, and enjoyed limited runs in a few selected cinema outlets.
What makes the movie unique is the fact that each of the seven segments was shot in real time. This means that each story was done in one long take – with absolutely no cuts at all – just like a theater production.
But what makes "Pi7ong Tagpo" even more ambitious is the length of each episode – between 13 to 20 minutes. To date, this has never been done before in local cinema.
As director Rahyan Carlos explains, the movie was inspired by such experimental films as Alfred Hitchcock’s "The Rope," Robert Altman’s "The Player," Brian de Palma’s "Snake Eyes," Rodrigo Garcia’s "Nine Lives" and more recently, Jeffrey Jeturian’s "Kubrador."
He expounds, "It’s about life’s journey – seven lives, seven struggles, seven decisions, seven realities – all in one take.
Truly we can say, life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you wish, but you can only spend it once."
However revolutionary his technical approach may seem, the director reiterates that the medium is not the message. "Technicalities aside, what’s MORE important here are the values we are imparting to the Filipino audience."
It was Creative Future’s attempt to think "out-of-the-box" that attracted Rahyan and the entire production team to the project. "They’re the type of producers who are willing to try something new," he exclaims. "We worked with one vision. It was a collaborative effort all the way."
"Pi7ong Tagpo" was graded "B" by the Cinema Evaluation Board.
