27 families displaced in coastal villages of Sarangani town

Bong Reblando

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Some 400 residents of the coastal villages in Malapatan, Sarangani were rendered homeless yesterday when giant waves smashed their houses, a disaster official said.

Carmelo Latoja, provincial disaster coordinating council chief, said no casualty was reported by Malapatan Mayor Aida Singcoy.

The big waves battered for at least hour the houses of 27 families residing in Puroks San Juan and Nicolas, Barangay Lun Padidu, Malapatan.

Sarangani Gov. Migs Dominguez immediately ordered Latoja to deploy relief teams to help the homeless residents now temporarily sheltered in a public school and a gymnasium.

Food products and clothes were distributed to the families.

At the same time, Dominguez and Singcoy said they are looking for a relocation site for the displaced villagers who suffer every year the wrath of big waves that pound their houses built near the shore.

Singcoy told reporters that the municipality has made available P1 million as a counterpart fund of the provincial government for the purchase of the relocation site for the affected families. The area would become their permanent residence.

"Our P1-million fund is ready. We are only waiting for the counterpart fund of the provincial government, so we can purchase the relocation area where the affected families would live safely," Singcoy said.

Apart from Malapatan, other coastal areas in the province and those living near the ravines are being monitored by the relief agency as rains continued to pour on Sarangani and nearby areas.
