KIDAPAWAN CITY — A 28-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter were believed drowned when they tried to cross the river in Tulunan, North Cotabato at about 3 p.m. last Thursday.
Gina Ingkal and daughter Christine Joy were swept away by floodwaters, together with their horse, when they tried to cross the Kinda River in Barangay Daeg at the boundary of Tulunan, North Cotabato, and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur.
Search and rescue volunteers had not yet found as of yesterday afternoon the bodies of the woman, and the child, as well as the horse.
The volunteers believed that the strong current dragged them to a stream, which is a tributary of the Magsaysay River in nearby Magsaysay town.
This was the second incident of drowning in North Cotabato this week.
Two days ago, rescuers recovered the body of Faustino Ferdinand Fernandez, 58, of Barangay Singao, and his horse.
He perished when he crossed the Nuangan River with his horse.
Fernandez’s body was found on the riverbank of Barangay Ugpay, M’lang town.
Fernandez’s horse was found five hours earlier on the river bank in Barangay Kalaisan.
From there, the rescuers followed a trail that led them to the body of Fernandez.
Heavy rains since last Monday have caused rivers in North Cotabato to overflow their banks and inundate low-lying villages in Tulunan, M’lang, and this city.
