Ateneo de Manila rallied behind the heroics of Juani Tiongson to beat San Beda, 77-74, and keep its record clean in the Nike Summer League basketball tournament Thursday at the Far Eastern University gym in Morayta.
Tiongson scored 29 points to power the Blue Eaglets to their fourth straight victory in as many outings.
The Red Cubs, on the other hand, absorbed their first loss after four outings.
The Eaglets were actually down 38-39 at halftime, but recovered in time to outscore the Cubs, 27-20, in the third.
With the win, Ateneo reamained in top spot of Group C.
In the seniors division, University of the Philippines bucked the lackluster performances of key players to turn back a determined San Beda-Alabang, 62-49.
Mike Silungan stepped into the limelight for the Maroons, scoring a team-high 18 points including four triples to help UP level its record to 2-2 in Group C.
In other seniors games, College of Saint Benilde routed Lyceum of Calamba, 84-64, while Adamson squeaked past Emilio Aguinaldo College, 71-70, and San Sebastian College dominated Perpetual Help 72-62.
Meanwhile, four big time varsity teams take the court in two interesting seniors games in the Nike Summer League today at the FEU Gym.
A pair of "crossover" games highlight today’s hostilities with UAAP’s Adamson and NCAA’s Mapua meeting at 11:30 a.m., shortly after the Letran-National University tiff at 1 p.m.
The women’s RP team is also scheduled to play as it faces Polytechnic University of the Philippines in the lone distaff game at 5:30 p.m.
