Beauty and the Gadgets: A two-part series on femme gadgets)
spacer

Jaye C. Bautista

Talk about beauty and geekiness. There are a lot of techie mommies and ladies out there who will attest to having tried a gadget or two to help make them feel and look good too.

I distinctly remember these words, "Technology magazines ignore women and women’s magazines ignore technology," says Mia Kim, founder and editor-in-chief of Popgadget.net. Admittedly, computers have become a household word and quite a necessity in most women’s homes and lives.

I for one can’t live without it! Computers are one thing, but we women also want to know about the latest high-tech hairdryers, hair strengtheners, exercise equipment or beauty procedures. It will really help us if we can get the scoop on the best gadgets that will help us look and feel our best. From keeping fit to keeping our creams cool, here are some trendy blends of technology and style.

Fitness & Fashion

Dieting is generally no fun, but you don’t have to be a gourmet chef to whip up something a little different and impressive without ramping up your calorie intake. Try getting a dehydrator. With lots of brands in the market today, dehydrators will let you make dried snacks out of things you’ve never seen in trail mix before. They also speed up the otherwise time-consuming process of fermenting fresh yogurt at home. You can also make your own jerky from lean turkey or chicken. For one, you can get the Ronco Dehydrator from Amazon

A fitness regime usually has two goals: fat burning and de-stressing. The personal trainers of Eye Toy: Kinetic for the Playstation 2 take you through martial arts, aerobics, and toning, and then cool you down with tai chi, yoga, and breathing exercises.

The video game comes with an EyeToy camera that puts you right on the screen so you can monitor your form and watch yourself spar with Matt and Anna, the perfectly fit and buff virtual trainers. Available from Buy.com and Amazon

In her top-selling DVD, comedian Kathy Griffin tells a story about not being able to find something in the dark black hole of her handbag. Someone needs to design a handbag with an inside that lights up, she quipped, "like a disco floor!" Along comes Solas Fashions, a company "dedicated to solving life’s little annoyances and adding tranquility to the urban lifestyle," and their hit clutch that lights up inside. You can find their patented lighting system in all of their handbags, like the Healing Clutch (fancied by Cameron Diaz), and large and mini Chakras.

Now let’s talk beauty. We can spend a fortune on pricey creams and perfumes, but wait till you see what I chanced upon that is way cool. A few days in a hot, humid bathroom can melt lipsticks, or turn moisturizers into useless and rancid puddles. Not yet carried by our local retailers, but as the case with most items nowadays, this cosmetics cooling device may be purchased online via Amazon and other online stores.

The Biszet Cosmetic Cooling Cabinet provides three different cooling zones, so you can keep your toners icy cool without making your eye pencils unusably hard. Available exclusively in the U.S. from Julian’s Fine Cabinetry and Design.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant used in many creams, but it is notoriously unstable. The Sonaki Vitamin C showerhead uses pharmaceutical grade vitamin C. It filters out up to 99% of chlorine naturally while showering you with the benefits of stable vitamin C.

The vitamin infused water protects color-treated hair (no more chlorine induced green-blonde) and moisturizes your skin. If you have friends or relatives in the ole US of A have them get you one.

Talk about Hi-Definition. Everyone enjoys watching TV programs on their high definition TVs. Planet Earth and Discovery Channel programs seem to regal viewers with their full visual glory on HD technology-equipped TV sets. Trouble is, HD TV is unkind in a way. We all know that standard TV makes on-air talents appear 10 to 20 pounds heavier.

HD TV, for its part, shows TV people’s faces at their best or worst with all their blemishes and imperfections. You know that old adage "a face made for radio?" I think there’ll be a new one for this era of hi-def: a face made for standard def. From an unlikely source comes a possible solution for that.
