On the expiration of the extension of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Hermogenes C. Esperon Jr.’s term, the Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Lieutenant General Alexander B. Yano, will assume today the Chief of Staff position.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo puts into motion a leadership transition that would secure continuity in the AFP.
Before becoming Commanding General of the Philippine Army, General Yano held key military positions covering a broad range of field command and staff assignments. Among the significant posts he held prior to his current one were Commander of the Southern Luzon Command, Commanding General of the 2nd Infantry Division, Philippine Army, Chief of Staff of the Philippine Army, Commanding General of the Civil Relations Service, AFP spokesman, and Assistant Commander of the 9th Infantry Division, Philippine Army Bicol.
General Yano is a member of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Magilas" Class of 1976 and is a recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including five Distinguished Service Stars, the Philippine Legion of Honor (Degree Officer), four Outstanding Achievement Medals, a Gold Cross for gallantry in combat, a Bronze Cross, 27 Military Merit Medals, a Gawad sa Kaunlaran Merit Medal, a Silver Wing Medal, a PMA Achievement Award, and various plaques of service and letters of commendations from both military and civilian sectors, including one of the Most Oustanding Zamboanga del Norte Citizens in 2003.
He is married to Estela Aragon Yano, a retired military nurse, and blessed with a son Ervin Andrew.
To the outgoing Chief of Staff, General Hermogenes C. Esperon Jr., we salute him for his committed service to the Republic. To the incoming Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Alexander B.
