10 Best Careers
Jorge Osit
An interesting article for job seekers recently came out in the Internet and since we are a nation where the siren call of working overseas is irresistible, I saved it in my documents knowing that it would be a good reference material for a future column.
For a better appreciation of this article titled "10 Best Careers," let us view it against the backdrop of a world now reeling from the impact of the global economy increasingly becoming shaky – and, compounding the situation, we are buffeted by global warming, population boom, spiking food and petroleum prices. In addition, technology and consumer preferences have made certain jobs outdated and out of this obsolescence new jobs have emerged.
So, in this context, for aspiring OFWs here is the list:
1. Nursing Informatics – Health care is a fast growing industry but computerization has not kept pace with it and most hospitals are still stuck with paper record-keeping. Those with training in nursing and health information technology are in the best position to bridge the gap between IT and patient care and they make over US $ 100,000 a year.
2. Experience Designer – This is all about creating a cozy and inviting customer experience and more experience designers are now in great demand as businesses realize that value of giving customers good experience. Executive designers with training in retail management do everything from selecting colors and fabrics to determining scents or sounds of a room to create ultimate business or shopping experience. They average around US$ 60,000 a year.
3. Viral Marketers – As pointed out in the article "they are not marketers with colds" but hype specialists capable of creating "contagion" about products or services via word-of-mouth. In big cities where highly sophisticated tactics are required, marketers earn roughly US$ 80,000.
4. Bloggers – Ah, for this one, there is no need for you to go abroad. With computer technology, together with writing talent and a "unique voice" in blogging, you can draw people from across the globe to your site to read what you are thinking in your journal. Businesses are hiring bloggers to write about their products. Top bloggers in the US make six figures.
5. Carbon Management Consultant – They are not coal miners but business professionals, usually with MBAs in an engineering or project management specialty, and they help businesses to reduce their carbon footprint in order to mitigate climate change. They earn US$ 60,000-US$ 100,000 a year.
6. Welders — Yes, this is good news for Pinoy welders. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics said 450,000 welders will be needed by 2014. Due to revolutionized welding technology, there will be a growing global demand for welders.
7. Personal Chef – Living in the fast lane and trends toward saving time in food shopping and preparation have contributed to the development of a career for personal chefs and it is a growing culinary career.
8. Conservation Scientist – Formerly known as forest rangers, these environmental protectors now hold one of the fastest growing jobs. It is now accepted that there is more to protecting national wild lands in the US than just preventing forest fires. This career easily earns US$ 56,000 a year.
9. International Logistic Manager – We all know that technology has shrunk our big wide world into a global village. International logistic managers ensure that materials and products are transported safely, within schedule time and within budget. These professionals, generally with degrees in logistics or supply chain management, are well compensated for their international experience.
10. HVACR Technicians – You are surely familiar with "HVACR" (heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration) technicians but what they do now is something new. Clean air and energy-efficiency are among today’s hot topics and those who have the expertise to work sophisticated HVACR systems are amply rewarded.
