The members of the judiciary and court employees paid their last respects yesterday to former Supreme Court (SC) Justice Jose Y. Feria in a memorial program led by Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno.
Feria, who served the SC from 1986 to 1987, died last Thursday due to a lingering illness.
He is survived by his wife, Concepcion, and four children – Ma. Martha, Felicisimo, Ma. Lucia, and Jose Jr. – and their families; 18 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
After the memorial program, Feria’s remains would be taken by members of the family to Magalang, Pampanga. The interment was set at 2 pm. on Friday, May 16, at the Caryana Lay Monastic Community in Magalang town.
The memorial program started at 11 a.m. with the singing of "Our Father" by the SC choir. Thereafter, Dean Amado L. Dimayuga and former SC Justice Ameurfina A. Melencio Herrera delivered their eulogies.
Puno delivered the farewell message from the members of the judiciary and court employees.
Feria’s son Felicisimo delivered the response on behalf of the family.
Feria was a long-time member and consultant of the SC’s committee on the revision of the rules of court.
He finished his bachelor of laws as a valedictorian and summa cum laude at the University of Santo Tomas in 1940 and passed the Bar in the same year.
Prior to his appointment to the judiciary, Feria was an active member of the academe. He taught law at the Lilian College of Law (1936-1940) and the UST (1940-1984).
He was dean of the UST College of Law from 1979 to 1985. At the same time, he was a lecturer at the University of the Philippines Law Center and at the Instituto de Derecho Processal, Colegio de Abogados in Madrid, Spain.
He was also a delegate to the 1971 Constitutional Convention.
Feria authored the book "Civil Procedure, Provisional Remedies, & Special Civil Action," and several articles on Constitutional Law, Annotation on Judiciary Reorganization Act, Interim Rules of Court, and the 1985 Rules on Criminal Procedure.
