The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) assured reporters that the strong earthquake which hit China yesterday will not have any effect in any part of the country.
In a phone interview, Phivolcs Director Dr. Renato Solidum, Jr. said the China quake, which measured 7.8 magnitude, is not expected to generate a tsunami as it was not an offshore quake.
"The earthquakes that will affect the country are those generated here, unless there is a major quake in the Pacific," Solidum said.
He said a strong earthquake in the region does not pose a threat to the Philippines, especially if it was just a groundshaking and not an offshore quake.
Phivolcs said it did not record any significant quake in the country yesterday.
The agency’s records showed an average of 20 earthquakes in a day but only few are felt or are significant.
The Philippines is prone to earthquakes due to its geographic location within the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where tsunamis and volcanic eruptions are also frequent.
