Photography is not just seeing things and freezing them. It is more of grasping images and visually making sense.
Artist-businessman Luis Martin Harder is a photography hobbyist with a mindset to see scenes beyond gazing. He perceives images and turning them into pictures of profound beauty. He transforms unscripted subjects into coherent stories of life, with all its meanings and mysteries silently pouring out through visual splendor.
His shots touch the heart with some warmth that magnetizes viewers’ eyes long before they realize it. Pictures of landscapes and common people produced through his camera express his passion that monumentally marks his artistry.
In the past few years, he made it through some group exhibits that began with "Beyond Frames." Now he is bound to make a bigger impact in the relatively small community of photography with his first one-man show called "Unscripted" to be held at the OWG Art Gallery in Makati for one whole month starting today.
"Normally a situation might occur and that moment will never happen again, so being able to capture such is vital for every photographer," expressed the out-of-the-box businessman who is CEO of Wings Technology Enterprise, Inc. that deals with distributing and procuring electronic parts.
His business, known in the industry as a good supplier and source of hard-to-find integrated circuits and semiconductor parts, may sound very technical and not into art. But this man at the helm is definitely embracing art in all its sense. In fact, whether he admits it or not, such inclination helped hasten the success of his electrical venture.
In his youth, a musician who played multiple instruments and sang folk songs, Luis found photography the art of maturity as he is now finding bliss in propagating his hobby through shooting sights worth-framing. It’s also a big plus that he gained friends from the industry like Leo Castillo, Jay Alonzo, and Rosscapili – his former classmate whom he didn’t see for 28 years. Thanks largely to photography, he and his school buddy have re-bonded and now working together in the name of visual art.
He deemed, "If people are looking at the sunset, you look opposite the sunset. You try to look for other things’ possibility."
His concern about producing things in a hard way somewhat made it easy for him to go into the inner circle of photography – learning more about the medium and accomplishing valuable inputs. In college, he already opted to spend much of his time with photography. But then the hobby was too way expensive for him to jump into and he had to wait for the right time to shoot at it again.
With the triumph of his business allowing him to do recreations that need some cash to really break through, and some friends guiding him towards the right path, Luis triumphantly reintroduces himself to the world of pictures and generated a new portfolio empowering the beautiful drama of outdoor photography. His travels around the scenic spots of the country and the outside world gave him a great deal of subjects, keeping him fresh and excited.

Luis’s middle name Martin and surname Harder both sound like foreign. But he is a pure Filipino pride whose solo exhibit "Unscripted" which opens today is expected to be attended by the who’s who of photography. Serving as a testament to the magnificence of his work, about 20 archival photographic prints focusing on textures, plant life, and landscapes are readied for the public to see. The subjects and scenes came off different locations around the country like Kayangan Lake, Coron, Anilao, Boracay, and Baguio. Some shots were even taken from Cambodia, the country known for its ‘Killing Fields’ but with a surrounding that boasts about life.
"Photography takes you away. Nakakalimutan mo ang trabaho. You’re so immersed with what you’re doing and
it occupies your mind so much but doesn’t leave you alone," Luis, who at present still sings and plays through his Christian faith ministry, stressed out.
He added, "I believe that ‘the more a picture tells you, the lesser you know,’ meaning, a picture which enables to keep its ‘beauty secrets’ becomes the ‘talk of the town,’ a legend. That’s what I’m after for, to come out with photographs depicting such significance."
Luis Martin Harder’s collection of "Unscripted" photographs might just contain soon-to-be-legend shots. Perceiving through his photographs, it won’t be a surprise if that happens in due time.
