Unseeded Fritz Verdad and Christian San Andres toppled fancied foes yesterday at the start of the First Gen-Juntaphil Metro Age-Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Verdad regained his touch in the third set to oust sixth seed Ed Amor, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in the boys’ 16 years and under while San Andres upset No. 6 Martin Opulencia, 6-1, 6-1, in the boys’ 12-under class.
Verdad’s win set him up to a second round date with John Arnel Go, who won over Joseph Viray by default.
San Andres, for his part, meets Claudio Canlas, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Miguel Miranda.
In other early matches, boys’ 16-under eighth seed Tim Polero dumped Quimrej Dimaboute, 6-0, 6-1, to set him self up for a second round meeting with the winner between Mark Limiulo and Dwight Borromeo, who are slated to clash today.
Boys’ 12-under fifth seed Jeremiah Latorre trounced Bruce Ivan Valenzuela, 6-3, 6-0, while seventh pick Romnee Kyle Joseph routed Miguel De la Paz, 6-2, 6-2, to advance into the next phase.
Second seed Steffi Del Rosario and third pick Crista Santiago also disposed of their unseeded opponents in the girls’ 12-under category.
Del Rosario whipped Mary Ramos, 6-1, 6-2, while Santiago blanked Adriana Villarosa, 6-0, 6-0.
In the unisex 10-under division, No. 5 Alberto Lim Jr., sixth seed Neil Puche, seventh pick Joel Atienza and No. 8 Elijah Arevalo easily cruised into the second round.
Lim blanked Bianca Marie Cruz, 6-0, 6-0, Pucha disposed of Wikrej Dimaboute, 6-0, 6-4, Atienza swept Annika Mallari, 6-0, 6-0, and Arevalo escaped past Erika Manduriao, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
