Vice President Noli de Castro said yesterday Kuwait’s Emir Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah has turned his attention towards the case of Filipina worker May Vecina who is facing the death penalty in Kuwait.
De Castro said Kuwait’s Emir granted him an audience for 10 minutes to discuss bilateral issues, including the fate of Vecina who was sentenced to death for killing her employer’s youngest son.
"We will see what we can do," De Castro quoted Kuwait’s Emir as saying.
De Castro, also the presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), is leading a delegation to bring the Philippines’ condolences to the family of former Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Abdullah alSabah who died recently.
The delegation is also appealing for Kuwait’s Emir to spare Vecina’s life.
De Castro said he assessed the Emir’s response as "very positive."
He said the Emir is impressed with the performance of the 120,000 OFWs in Kuwait.
The Emir had already spared OFW Marilou Ranario from the death penalty and commuted her sentence, upon an appeal by President Arroyo late last year.
Vecina was convicted for killing her employer’s youngest son, as well as attempting to kill his 13- year-old brother and 17- year-old sister in January, 2007.
Last April, the Kuwaiti High Court affirmed Vecina’s conviction, leaving her fate in the hands of the Emir who could spare her life just by refusing to sign the order for her to hang.
