By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA

Siblings Bernardine and Sallymae Siso hacked out upset victories yesterday in the First Gen-Juntaphil Metro Age Group Tennis Championships at the Olivarez Sports Complex in Parañaque City.

Bernardine, unseeded in the boys’ 16 years and under, survived the big plays of second seed Pemrik Alina to hack out a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 win for a semifinals berth.

Sally Mae, for her part, thumped top seed Shannin Olivarez, 7-5, 6-2, in the girls’ 14-under to move a win away from the crown.

As if it was not enough, the younger Siso caught Olivarez flat-footed once again and breezed past the 16-under top seed, 3-6, 6-7 (3), 6-0, to line herself up for another double championship.

Bernardine goes up against third seed Jason Patrombon, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over eighth pick Tim Polero, in the semifinals.

Sally Mae, meanwhile, set up a finals meetings with 14-under second seed Macy Gonzalez, who trounced No. 4 Samantha Coyiuto, 6-1, 6-1, and a 16-under semis collision with the winner between No. 3 Sarah Jane Lim and Coyiuto.

Matches were moved from the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center due to the wet weather.

Joanne Therese Opulencia and third seed Kyle Parpan also shared the day’s honors.

Opulencia downed seventh seed Louise Lopez, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 for a quarterfinals appearance against second pick Jasmine Tan Ho, who won via default over Jessica Lagman.

Parpan, for his part, shocked Joachim Samson, 6-4, 7-6 (5) for the boys’ 12-under finals date with top seed Argil Lance Canizares.

Canizares earlier survived the upset-axe with a hard-earned 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win over No. 4 Betto Orendain.

Meanwhile, fancied pairs dominated the doubles action.

Girls’ 18 and under top pick Enah Baba and Macy Solon blanked Jean Pedrena and Isabella Mendoza, 6-0, 6-0, to set up a semis date with JV Custodio and Crizzabelle Paulino.

Custodio and Paulino routed Cristabelle Paulino and Mary Grace Rivero, 6-0, 6-2.

Girs’ 14 and under second seed Akiko De Guzman and Erika Lagura also made waves and trounced Maxine Mella and Jana Hernandez, 6-0, 6-1.

Guzman and Lagura clash with twin sisters Ma. Aura and Ma. Raisa Opulencia in the semis, who beat Treena Quierrez and Nicole Eugenio, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
