Feast of the Holy Trinity: The mystery of the communion of three persons in love

TODAY we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity. Since the 1300s, the Christian Church has celebrated, on the Sunday immediately following Pentecost, a feast dedicated to the Holy Trinity, to help all believers focus more explicitly on who God is.

A successful closure to WWII Veterans Equity Act?
By Fidel V. Ramos

LAST Sunday’s piece marked the completion of my third straight year as a weekly column writer for the Manila Bulletin – without missing a single deadlineo It has been a daunting challenge and my own "Long March" of recalling, recording, researching, and ‘riting – but, all in all, a most fulfilling experience. In a certain sense, the three years could be related to the same length of time it took the Filipino-American forces and their allies to liberate the Philippines after the fall of Bataan. These were, of course, two completely different happenings, but meaningful for me, having been a participant or witness in both. The similarity lies in the successful closure to these two events, with mission accomplished!! With today’s column, I now begin my 4th year….

A RECENT report by a US-based global humanitarian organization revealed that only a third of Filipino children under the age of 5 get basic health care, making the country one of the worst places for infants and mothers.

Are you a carrot, an egg or coffee bean?

The Meralco affair
By Rene Espina

THERE is a controversy between GSIS and the present Lopez-Meralco management. GSIS, together with other government entities owns almost 33 percent of Meralco, while the Lopez management group owns about 33 percent plus. The GSIS claimed that Meralco was mismanaged and that they were denied access to the records of said company; while Meralco, said that they were cooperating with GSIS provided that they followed the law. GSIS replied that Meralco required them to sign waiver and confidentiality documents which will prevent them from using the said documents for other legal purposes.

Some thoughts on education for the 21st century
By EMMA H. SANTOS-CASTILLO
Philippine Normal University and Linguistic Society
of the Philippines

THE education enterprise has the biggest bureaucracy in the country but it has not lived up to expectations. Results of assessments of its outcomes and accomplishments have been disappointing, most especially at the basic education level. It is not that we have not been serious about identifying targets and meeting them; it is not that we have been lacking in ambitious projects and programs, which have been planned considerably well with needed consultations and national and even international meetings and conferences. But the fact remains that education at this time seems to be in a sorry state.

Discourse with Nicodemus

John 3:16-18

Shoveling into God’s bin
By Nelly Favis Villafuerte

SOMEONE once said that "only a life lived giving to and sharing with others is worth living." As natural calamities wrought death and damages to some countries then and now, we see the outpouring of assistance from other countries. In our personal lives, we likewise see other people sharing their blessings to others to the poor, to the sick, and to anybody in need. Giving and sharing with others has a Biblical basis. The Holy Bible simply says: "Bless and you will be blessed."

Time to stop driving!
By Dr. Jose S. Pujalte Jr.

FOR many people, independence is symbolized by the freedom and ability to drive his or her own car. Some people who can afford chauffeuring may still want to drive by themselves occasionally. But for those aging and yet forced to drive to and from work, to drive to market, or bring the last teenaged daughter to a party, there may be a few serious reasons for giving up getting in front of the wheel altogether.
