TRECE MARTIRES CITY – Former senator Vicente "Tito" C. Sotto III, chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), led the other day the burning of shabu valued at some P5.3 billion at the Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) in Barangay Aguado, this city.
The illegal drugs destroyed consisted of 730 kilos of shabu recently seized in Subic by elements of the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) headed by Undersecretary Antonio "Bebot" Villar Jr. in coordination with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s (PDEA) Region 3 Office, the Bureau of Customs (BoC) and the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force (AIDSOTF), and other government intelligence units.
Last April, Sotto said, PDEA also destroyed by burning some R10.2 billion worth of illegal drugs, precursors and chemicals, and dangerous drugs-making equipment, also at the IWMF here.
The burning the other day of the illegal drugs was in accordance with the procedure required by Republic Act No. 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002," Sotto said.
Sotto is a co-author of R.A. 9165, together with the late Sen. Robert Z. Barbers.
With Sotto at the destruction rites were representatives of local government units, including Trece Martires City Mayor Jun Sagun. (Yul Malicse)
