Coverup on Chong killing try feared

Biliran Rep. Glenn Chong scored police probers investigating the foiled assassination attempt on the life of Naval, Biliran, trader Charles P. Chong, for the way local cops are handling said case.

"I smell a coverup here," the congressman said as the chief of police station of the municipality of Naval confirmed placing one of the suspects, a policeman, under his custody.

The case stemmed from the ambush of businessman Chong while en route home from his downtown office at Cinemar Building in Barangay P.I. Garcia at 7:30 p.m. of June 7, 2008.

Charles Chong escaped death but two of his close-in security, Alberto Parilla and Antonio Barcelo, were severely wounded by motorcycle-riding armalite-wielding gunmen.

The alleged motorcycle-riding assailants were reported seen in Barangay Caraycaray almost three hours after the shooting incident.

In a supplemental joint affidavit dated July 4, 2008, two witnesses identified three policemen as among those who allegedly rode the motorcycles in tandem.

They were identified from photos furnished by a CIDG officer.

Charles Chong doused speculations of robbery as the motive behind the slay try. "Nobody attempted to take my bag of money during the fateful incident," he said. "They tried to kill me for political reasons."
