ILOILO CITY –The city government here is eyeing an immediate but temporary communal shelter for displaced families living along the riverbanks of Jaro River at the city-owned San Isidro relocation site in Jaro district pending the construction of 400 Gawad Kalinga housing units.
City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said the temporary shelter will accommodate an initial batch of 300 culled from target 2,910 relocatee-families currently occupying danger areas especially at the riverbanks.
Treñas said that after the flood devastation, the city will positively rise and become a better place to live after the massive rehabilitation program is completed that includes relocation of residents living in danger zones here.
The program is in partnership with Homeless Peoples International, city urban poor affairs office and other urban poor associations in providing a communal shelter for the displaced flood-victim families who are still occupying some evacuation centers after their houses were destroyed and carried away by the onrushing flood brought by typhoon "Frank."
The city will build communal toilets, kitchen and temporary bedrooms for the displaced families while the city is slowly developing the relocation site area of 16.2 hectares in Brgy. San Isidro, Jaro.
The city government bought the area some two years ago costing R162 million and intended as a relocation site of informal settlers and families soon to be displaced by the multi-million peso flood control project in Jaro district.
The city mayor said under the Gawad Kalinga concept, 300 housing units will be put up by the city government amounting to R18 million while 100 units costing R6 million will be put up by city lone congressman Raul T. Gonzalez Jr. at the San Isidro relocation site.
