Jubilee Pauline Year

PAUL was born in Tarsus in the early first century A.D. From a family of Roman citizens, he had, as a boy, joined the attacks against Christians in the city of Jerusalem. As a young man, he became personally and passionately involved in violent attacks against Christians, even being present at the stoning of the disciple Stephen. Saul was on his way to the city of Damascus to continue with the persecution of Christians when he had a vision of Jesus. This encounter led to his conversion and he adopted the name Paul and became, with the apostle Peter, one of the two main preachers of the Gospel of Christ.

Philippines & Vietnam: ‘Boat people’ and good neighbors
By Fidel V. Ramos

LAST Sunday’s column revisited Philippine support and assistance from 1964 to 1971 to the beleaguered people of Vietnam, particularly the South, by virtue of R.A. 4162 (July, 1964) and R.A. 4664 (June, 1966), both approved by President Diosdado Macapagal. The mission of the successive Philippine Contingents and Civic Action Groups to Vietnam (PHILCONV/PHILCAGV) was "to heal and build, not destroy" in the spirit of kapatiran (brotherhood).

The Sabah deportations
By Rene Espina

THE Blas F. Ople Policy Center (BFO) urges that our country should have a reintegration plan in place for thousands of returning Filipinos as the Malaysian government and officials of Sabah gear up for a massive deportation of illegal workers in that state. The Sabah-based Malaysian Federal Special Task Force (FSTF) created to implement the crackdown, announced last Tuesday that about 250 Filipinos were held at the Mangatal Detention Center prior to deportation from Sandakan via ferry to Zamboanga City. The FSTF said it is targeting 25,000 illegal immigrants to be deported this year. Indonesians and Filipinos are the biggest number of undocumented workers in Sabah. Last year, 19,000 illegal immigrants were deported. Most of the Filipino deportees from that state came from Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan and the three Zamboanga provinces. From January to May, 2008, from the capital of Sabah-Kota Kinabalu alone, around 9,670 were deported. Of the said number, 6,900 were Filipinos. From 1990 to 2007, a total of 298,601 were deported. Of that number, more than one half were Filipinos. Or 161,704 persons. We are told that the Philippine embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, had agreed to conduct regular consultations to ensure the humane treatment as well as safe deportation of Filipinos. "In the absence of clear and viable alternatives, these returnees may be left with little choice but to return illegally to Sabah or join the rebels and bandits hiding in the jungles of Mindanao," the Ople Center report concluded.

Genes and the genetic code
By Ricardo M. Lantican
The National Academy of Science and Technology

IN 1856, Gregor Mendel, an Austrian and Augustinian monk, discovered and demonstrated that hereditary traits were determined by particulate units that were handed down from parents to offspring in an organized pattern. Though the paper was published in 1865, it was largely ignored by the scientific community. Mendel’s work was rediscovered in 1900, some 40 years after his death, but its full value remained unappreciated until the first quarter of the 20th century. In 1902, William Bateson, a noted cellular biologist, coined the term "genes" for Mendel’s units of inheritance and "genetics" for the discipline relating to its study. Bateson and a host of classical geneticists contributed greatly to the growth of knowledge in genetics.

The parable of the sower
Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9

JESUS went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And He spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear."

The miracle of sunlight therapy
By Nelly Favis Villafuerte

WE all want to have excellent health. But we differ as to how we can achieve excellent health. For one, many of us today are dependent on prescription drugs to heal us of our different ailments. Be it simple colds, or heart disease, or allergies, or hypertension or cancer. No wonder prescription drugs are a fast-growing portion of our health care costs here and abroad. No wonder the pharmaceutical industry is booming. In contrast, people of earlier times were using natural healing remedies. Some centuries ago, before the discovery of antibiotics and the hundreds of other drugs – people were using fruits, vegetables and other plants to heal their ailments. And sunlight too!

Sleep 101
By Dr. Jose S. Pujalte Jr.

SLEEPING is something so precious but taken for granted. Some of us don’t even know something is wrong with our sleep. However, these are some clues: You wake up tired, not rested; you are irritable with companions and co-workers; you have difficulty remembering or concentrating; you fall asleep at work, during meetings, and maybe while your wife (or husband) is talking.
