Reuben Laurente launches farewell CD today

Kaye Villagomez

Balladeer Reuben Laurente leaves the local pop music scene with a farewell album to be launched tonight at the Hard Rock Café.

The CD contains covers of popular songs previously recorded by female artists.

The idea behind the CD, Reuben shared was, "From my team, my management outfit, Real Talent, decided on this concept. My manager, Mr. Henry Onglatco and our marketing manager, Ms Roli Ventura. We thought it’s time for me to do an all revival album with a twist."

He added, "I am totally aware that a lot of our OPM male recording artists have done their own take on songs that were originally recorded by female artists, why not a retrospective album featuring a baritone pop voice paying homage to the female audiophile? More often than not, when a song is performed by a female, it is automatically identified as a woman’s song. This time around, allow me to express the sensitivity of the male."

But Reuben will not be around to push promotions for the CD as he will soon navigate a different field, leaving behind what he has started as a solo act in Manila. "I’m leaving in August to work as ‘Featured Artist’ on Mariner of the Seas, the ship that’s under Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. I’ll be away for 5 months to perform in South America, the western Caribbean islands, and L.A."

Reuben said it was an opportunity he could not say no to. "This opportunity came when RCCL conducted auditions last April and five Filipinos passed. Along with me who passed were Anna Fegi, who is also offered ‘Featured Artist’ on Radiance of the Seas, stage/musical actor Roy Rolloda, who is now part of HK Disney’s Golden Mickeys) , singer/dancer RJ Camangon of the UP PepSquad, and CCP Tanghalan Pilipino’s Mayen Estanero. We will be the first Filipinos to have been invited to work there."

But the former member of The Company disclosed that he’d rather be with Filipinos if only the industry is more open to talents like himself. He intimated, "Our country has a lot of musical talents and somehow the entertainment industry would overlook the local talents that we have. It’s a pity that our very own artists are noticed by the local music industry only after being recognized internationally."

"I guess international recognition is the barometer of an artist’s ‘feasibility’ and ‘visibility’ as a marketable singer and performer."

If there is one thing in the local music system that he wishes to change, it would be, "For the industry to recognize talent in its purity, regardless of age, social status, and visual image. Filipinos deserve to be offered what is best and not mediocrity. There are a lot of good artists who deserve the break and the fame that they are experiencing right now, but there are countless more who deserve to be given proper recognition."

Reuben’s album launch tonight at the Hard Rock Café is also his farewell gig. "I want to be known as a true Filipino artist, because a true artist does not choose a stage , does not choose a venue, as long as there are ears, eyes, and hearts that are open to his artistry. No place is too small nor too large, no venue is too near nor too far, and no stage is too low nor too high. I started singing in barangay singing contests on top of Christmas lights embellished local jeepneys. I thank God I’ve gone a long way and it’s an accomplishment to perform this time in the open sea," he concluded.
