Providing opportunities for out-of-school youths and underprivileged adults WHILE access to basic education has been secured for the younger generation, many young Filipinos have dropped out of school for various reasons. In order to provide new opportunities for these out-of-school youths and adults in poor and remote communities, the Department of Education (DepEd), in collaboration with the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), has implemented programs under its Alternative Learning System (ALS). This year the ALS program targets over 70,000 beneficiaries with the dispatch of around 1,400 ALS mobile teachers nationwide.

Social studies in basic education By Florangel Rosario Braid DURING my elementary and high school days in the early 40’s, our social studies curriculum was quite simple — focusing on civics, good citizenship and basic geography and history of the country. Over time, social studies had evolved – rightly so, as it must respond to dynamic changes in the environment. But there has been some criticism about how so much knowledge is integrated in subjects like Hekasi (Geography, History and Social Studies) and later in Makabayan which combines Hekasi, Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkalusugan or EPP and Filipino, and thus making evaluation quite difficult.
