Sabado Boys deals with off-stage conflicts
spacer

Kaye Villagomez

In show business, the more interesting and juicy things happen behind the camera, on the sidelines and off the stage.

The case of male group Sabado Boys is no different. Conflicts among its members happen — and are dealt with — off stage.

"Merong mga conflicts. Hindi naman naiiwasan minsan. Marami kasi kami so there will be times na nagkakaproblema talaga," Luke Mejares confessed to the Manila Bulletin during an interview for Sabado Boys’ upcoming concert "Niteout" on Sept. 20 and 26 at the Music Museum.

But Luke said things have not gone too far and it does not look like it’ll get worst than "occasional discussions." He explained, "Wala namang pisikalan. Wala pa namang nagkakainitan to the point na nagkasapakan na," he jested. "May mga konting diskusyon lang kapag nag-mi-meeting, nangyayari yun pag mga meeting na kami-kami lang din ang nag-uusap. Usually, the conflicts are all about schedules. Like if there’s a project tapos kailangan mag-agree ang lahat. It’s more of coordination conflicts na naso-solve din naman."

When you have six guys — Luke, Jimmy Bondoc, Mike Chan, DJ Myke Salomon, Paolo Santos, and Top Suzara — and six minds taking care of both pleasure and the business aspects of managing a group, it’s even surprising that the conflicts are confined to close-door discussions.

Without the formal structure of a manager, things can get tricky for the boys. At the moment however it’s Mike Chan who speaks for the group and somewhat shoulders the burden of coordinating things to agreeable decisions. "We don’t have a manager but usually ako lang ang nakikipag-usap. Each individual has a minimum talent fee naman and if one agrees to a project, lahat dapat agree din so there are a lot of adjustments din among everyone that each of us are always willing to make."

If there’s one thing that definitely works for the group on and off stage it’s the members’ chemistry. The comic spunk and timing flows naturally from every boy in the group. Each of them is a trouper, not one member minds being on the receiving end of punch lines from anyone.

Expect the same free-flowing brand of entertainment in "Niteout" plus the individual downright musical gift from the Sabado Boys members.

The two-night show will be an all-out trip down memory lane to the comebacking music of the ‘80s. The boys will treat the Music Museum audience in Greenhills, San Juan with local and foreign hits that made that stretch the music decade to remember.

In the repertoire are songs like "You To Me Are Everything," "Don’t You Forget About Me," "Rhythm Of The Night,"2 "All Night Long," APO hits among many other familiar hits.

There will also be an "American Idol-esque" segment with each of the boys singing before a surprise panel of three judges.

Produced by Live Artist Production, this one memorable "Niteout" is directed by Calvin Neria from a script by Noel Ferrer.
