Happy Grandparents Day! TODAY, we join a significant number of countries worldwide in celebrating Grandparents Day. The day is a very important day, especially among close-knit Filipino families who have always regarded their elderly members as sources of good advice, wisdom, guidance, and enlightenment. Grandparents are the "unsung role models and caregivers" of Filipino households.

Re-engineering the ARMM concept By RENE ESPINA FOR years our government has been trying to give local autonomy to our citizens in the areas in Mindanao where the majority population happens to be of the Islamic faith. Writing from memory I remember that after the mini wars in Cotabato, Lanao, Basilan and Sulu involving rebels who were Moslems, President Marcos created two autonomous regions: One with a seat of government in Cotabato City and the other in Zamboanga City. That was how the Marcos regime tried to solve the rebellion in those areas. Earlier rebel leaders were induced to surrender or defect to the government by granting them logging concessions, special import licenses i.e. sardines etc, plus monetary assistance for the armed groups under them. Later after the EDSA revolution Mrs. Corazon Aquino sent Secretary Aquilino Pimentel and Butch Aquino to the Middle East to persuade Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) leader in exile Nur Misuari to return to the Philippines. Upon Misuari’s return Mrs. Aquino together with DND Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile went to Sulu in order to talk peace with Nur. When General Fidel Ramos became President he forged an agreement with Misuari and the said MNLF leader was elected governor of the ARMM. The said autonomous region was established based on the new 1987 Constitution: re Autonomous regions; Sections 15-21 of Article X "Local Government". Said provisions give the basic principles and parameters of creating the regions, processes, powers, rights, duties etc. In brief Section 15. There shall be created autonomous regions in Moslem Mindanao xx "within the framework of this Constitution and the national sovereignty as well as the territorial integrity of the Republic of the Philippines"; Section 16. The President shall exercise general supervision over autonomous regions to ensure that laws are faithfully executed. Section 17. All powers, functions, and responsibilities not granted by this Constitution or by law to the autonomous regions shall be vested in the national government. Section 18. Creation by Congress-plebiscite etc. Section 20. Within its territorial jurisdiction and subject to the provisions of this Constitution and national laws, the organic act of autonomous regions shall provide for legislative powers over: (1) administration; (2) sources of revenue; (3) ancestral domain, natural resources; (4) family and property relations; (5) development planning; (6) economic, social, tourism development; (7) educational policies; (8)preservation and development of cultural heritage; (9) such other matters for the general welfare as authorized by law. Section 21. The preservation of peace and order within the region shall be the responsibility of the local police agencies, which shall be organized, maintained, supervised, and utilized in accordance with applicable laws. The defense and security of the regions shall be the responsibility of the national government. The Constitution is quite clear as to what should and could be done.
Human memory in the digital age By ROMMEL B. DE LA CRUZ, Ed.D. Graduate School, Jose Rizal University THE pace with which Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) evolve and revolutionalize society has left human memory marooned in a tumultuous sea of change, unpredictability, and instability. The future has been yanked out from its temporal location and dragged into our perception of the present. Just days ago they were saying, "The future has arrived." Actually from the time ICTs were put into motion, the future is already around us. It has been here, complicating the present and obscuring the past.

Valley of the Kings By Nelly Favis Villafuerte IS there life after life? Is there continuity between life now and life to come? To a Bible-believing Christian there is afterlife because a personal relationship with our loving Christ cannot be broken by physical death. Death to a Bible-believing Christian brings him to our Creator to share eternal life. Simply put, a Bible-believing Christian believes that since God is the creator of life, He can certainly restore life. In John 11:25, Jesus Christ said: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die." This is the blessed promise of immortality. Our caring God who created us will not just discard us like a paper cup.
Prostatitis By JOSE S. PUJALTE JR. THEY say that the uniquely male organ called the prostate looks like a walnut. I have good memories of walnuts. As a child, I’d whip out the nutcracker right about Christmas time when we’d get gifts of imported nuts. The walnut was the next easiest to open after hazelnuts. Oh we’d never get enough of those! Now here’s a condition that cracks – in a manner of speaking – the prostate. And here’s something that you can do without.
