PNP bans long firearms in Davao

Ben D. Arche

DAVAO CITY — Police Regional Office (PRO) in Region 11 will now be strictly implementing the ban against entry of long firearms in Davao City as part of strengthening the security measures inside and around the region.

Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II, PRO 11 director said police, military and public officials must deposit their long firearms at the checkpoint before they would be allowed entry in the city.

Caro clarified those who would refuse to deposit their long firearms will not be allowed to enter the city.

However, Caro said all security personnel will only be allowed to enter the city with their short service firearms.

No one will be spared from the policy, Caro stressed.

He said he already informed the authorities in Central Mindanao and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao about the policy so that politicians there who used to visit the city with their bodyguards will not be caught unaware.

Task Force Davao (TFD) has asked the presence of media in their checkpoint to observe the implementation of the policy.

Colonel Oscar Lactao, TFD chief said the presence of the media at their checkpoints would also ease the tension between the implementing authorities and the armed visitors who might resist the new policy.

Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno and Philippine National Police chief Avelino Razon hosted a peace conference with the top executives of Davao region at the Waterfront Hotel here the other day.

Among those present were Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Davao City Vice Mayor Sara Duterte, Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Cagas, Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy, Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat, and Anthony del Rosario who represented Governor Rodolfo del Rosario.

Mayor Rabat, however, refused to disclose the subject matter that was discussed during the conference saying it was confidential.

Other officials who attended the conference opted to keep mum over the situation that transpired inside the conference area since Duterte left just 30 minutes later and followed by other participants.
