For the first time in NCAA history, the league will be using the International Basketball Foundation (FIBA) classification point system to determine the Final Four cast of the 84th edition of the country’s oldest collegiate league.
The NCAA Management Committee (Mancom) has laid down the rules as five teams are in the running for the Final Four and to break the impasse, it is going to apply the FIBA classification point system.
There are two possible scenarios entering the final playdate of the eliminations on Wednesday when defending champion San Beda battles Letran at the Araneta Coliseum.
In the event the Knights win, the Intramuros-based squad will forge a two-way tie for first with the Mendiola dribblers at 10-4 and another tie for third to fifth places among San Sebastian, Jose Rizal University and Mapua – all closing out the elims with 10-4 records.
If that happens, the Knights and Red Lions will once again clash to determine the No. 1 team while the three teams will go through a stepladder knockout with the Stags earning a bye on account of superior quotient.
The Stags will meet the winner between Mapua and JRU. The loser in the Mapua-JRU showdown will be eliminated outright.
The winner in the second playoff match will end up third and the loser fourth.
But SBC wins, the Red Lions will claim the first twice-to-beat advantage in the semis while the four teams – SSC, JRU, Letran and Mapua will slug it out to determine who takes the No. 2 slot.
For owning the best quotient, SSC will face fifth seeded JRU while Letran tackles Mapua.
The winners in both matches will face each other to determine who gets the second twice-to-beat advantage while the losers will clash against to dispute the last semis berth.
Meanwhile, San Sebastian College guns for a sweep in the eliminations when the defending champion Staglets clash with the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers today in the NCAA juniors basketball tournament at the Astrodome.
Game time is at 12 noon with the three-time titlist Staglets seeking to protect their immaculate 11-0 win-loss record against the third-running Light Bombers (7-4).
A win for the Staglets would give them an automatic finals berth with the second to fourth teams battling it all out through stepladder knockout eliminations for the other seat.
