Love hints on joining Spurs
Kevin Love may have been mum on trade rumors since arriving in Manila, but the Minnesota Timberwolves star hinted a way to “expedite” his chase for an NBA championship.
Asked about his championship ambitions, Love, who appeared as a special guest in last night’s Master Game Face Challenge at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, told a group of scribes that joining the newly-crowned NBA champion San Antonio Spurs could turn his dream into reality.
“I’ve got to crack the playoffs and continue to get better individually. I’ve been coached by some great coaches and I’ve been on some young teams, so…. I think if there’s a way I can jump on that Spurs roster, maybe I’ll get expedited on the road to the NBA championship. But hopefully soon, I’m 25 now, maybe when I’m 26,” Love said.
While the Spurs reference was meant in jest, his comments seem to suggest that Love is seeking greener pastures as reports of him being traded are spreading like wildfire.
The Boston Celtics are rumored to be interested in Love, who earlier this month met up with Celtics guard Rajon Rondo while watching a Boston Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park.
The Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets have reportedly offered some of their key players in hopes of landing the United States national team member.
Love, known for his outside shooting and rebounding prowess, has been in the league for six seasons, all with Minnesota. He was drafted fifth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2008 NBA Draft before his rights were traded to the Timberwolves.
But the UCLA alumnus has never led Minnesota to the playoffs. The Timberwolves went 40-42 during the regular season to finish 10th in the Western Conference.
Part-owner and team president Flip Saunders was recently named as coach of the Timberwolves, and will try to either convince Love to stick around or trade him.
Love can opt out of his contract in 2015 to become a free agent.
