LnB Goals

Barangay chairmen should play a more active role in the development works being undertaken in their respective turfs. This was the sentiment of Lorenzo “Boy’’ Zuniga Jr. the newly elected president of the 674 strong Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) in Laguna province. In a news conference in Quezon City yestesrday, Zuniga vowed to vigorously campaign for the amendments to the Local Government Code so that a Magna Carta for Barangay Captains and other officials may be enacted by Congress. He maintained that a Magna Carta will empower barangay chairmen and other officials to be recognized as essential agents for change in their areas. He will also bat for the enactment of a law giving fixed monthly salaries to barangay chairmen instead of mere honorarium. (Chito Chavez)

Bus Runs Over 80-yr.-old Woman

OLONGAPO CITY – An 80-year-old woman, said to be collecting bets for the small-town lottery (STL) was killed by a Victory Liner bus as it was pulling out of the garage in Brill St.West Bajac-Bajac, here, last Sunday. Virginia D. Dael, of Alagaw Street in Barangay Mabayuan, here, was run over by the Victory Liner bus with body number 803 (plate no. CWA-325), around 9 a.m. The old lady, who was run over by both the front and rear tires of the bus, was taken to James L. Gordon Memorial Hospital but died soonafter. (Jonas Reyes)

Teen Suicide

CAMP JUAN, Ilocos Norte — A 16-year-old boy hanged himself at the living room of his house in Dumalneg town, police reported yesterday. Bennysel Reyes, a resident from the remote village of Purok Saniata in Dumalneg town, was found hanging by the neck by his mother last Monday, said PO1 Ferdinand Sacsac, duty investigator of Dumalneg Police Station. When asked what could have driven a teenaged boy to commit suicide, Sacsac said the victim’s mother told probers that son was suffering from an incurable illness. (Freddie G. Lazaro)

‘Bringing Justice To The People’

ILAGAN, Isabela — Maintaining peace and order, joint operatives of San Guillermo Police, Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB) and Isabela Provincial Police Office (PPO) arrested a wanted person believed to be a gun-for-hire and alleged leader of the “Cabaero and Sta. Ana Robbery-Holdup Group” in this province. Superintendent Paul Bometivo, said Narciso Cabaero Babalo, 47, a native of Tigaon, Camarines Sur, and resident of San Guillermo, Isabela, was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest at 4 p.m. last Sunday for the crimes of murder. Sr. Supt. Sotero Ramos Jr., PPO director, earlier ordered a manhunt against Babalo who is the suspect in the killing of Senior Police Officer 4 Jose Dacopcom, in May 2010 and the killing of Mae Aguinde, a public school teacher in May 2013. Back Rider Dies In Collision

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — A 31-year-old-bachelor died after a motorcycle driven by his friend collided with another motorcycle while traversing the national road in Purok 7, Barangay Quinastillojan, Tabaco City, late Sunday night. Senior Superintendent Ruben Sodsod, Albay Police Provincial Office (PPO) director, identified the victim as Sarlino Berden, a resident of Barangay Buang in Tabaco. Berden and Cesar Borabo, 29, were back riders on the Honda ZN 125 motorcycle driven by Alberto Bidol Bongon, 35, when it collided with an on-coming Honda Wave 100 motorcycle driven by one Jonathan B. Mape, 30. The collision threw Berden off the motorbike and his head slammed against a mango tree. (Niño N. Luces)
