SORSOGON CITY (PIA) — Its all system go for the Kasanggayahan Festival 2013 that reels off Thursday, marking the 119th foundation anniversary of the province of Sorsogon. The opening day will be highlighted by the re-enactment of the first Holy Mass in mainland Luzon wherein history points to the small fishing village in Gibalon, in the town of Magallanes, as the site of the religious activity. The re-enactment depicts a progressive dramatization of Sorsogon’s crucial role in the Christianization of the country. Papier-mâché “Higantes” and costumed participants will lend color to the parade which will be held along Sorsogon’s commercial district.
Pope Francis has appointed a missionary priest as the new bishop of the Diocese of Romblon. Fr. Narciso Abellana of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) was appointed by the Pontiff Tuesday as Bishop of Romblon. He will be Romblon’s fifth bishop after it was erected into a diocese in December, 1974. According to an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Web site, Abellana will succeed Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc who was transferred to the Diocese of Aklan in July, 2011. The bishop-elect is currently the chaplain of the Central Luzon State University in Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. (Leslie Ann G. Aquino)
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) recently opened the joint One-Stop Processing Center (OSPC) at the Clark International Airport, OWWA Regional Information Officer Freya Palad said. Palad said the objective is to make it easy for vacationing OFWs to process their POEA Balik Manggagawa Overseas Employment Certificate, and renewal of OWWA membership. She said Clark is a strategic choice in the establishment of an OSPC. “We expect arriving OFWs in the airport to balloon, now that it has direct flights to and from Dubai,” she added. (Franco Regala)
BONTOC, Mountain Province (PIA) – The secretary of the Liga ng mga Barangay in this town was recently commended by the municipal government for her honesty. Mayor Franklin Odsey awarded the municipal commendation to Liza Masweng during the flag-raising program at the municipal plaza here last week. Municipal Council Resolution No. 457, Series 2013, cited Masweng for her “honesty in returning without hesitation” six municipal government checks she chanced upon her way to the Liga Office at the back of the town hall. Masweng promptly handed the checks to the Municipal Accounting Office.
TABUK CITY, Kalinga (PIA) – Four farmer organizations in this city recently received farm machineries from the Department of Agriculture (DA) as part of its farm mechanization program. Through the City Agriculturist’s Office, the farmer service providers from villages of Appas, Balong and Tuga received a set of tresher, multi-tiller, and a rice cutter each, while members of the Cabaruan Multi-Purpose Cooperative received a combined rice harvester and reaper machine. The DA has identified this city, being the top rice producing province in the region, as a recipient of farm machineries to increase production towards the achievement of rice sufficiency in by 2015.
