CHILDREN’S WELFARE PROGRAMS LAUDED

Tacurong City – The local government here was recently lauded for its implementation of Project Paglaum, one of the programs under Millennium Development Goals (MDG) which aims to improve the living conditions of children in slum areas; Busog Lusog Talino (BLT), a sustained feeding program for school children; Peace Summer Camp, a youth leadership training; and Kalinga sa mga Batang Lansangan, a comprehensive program that seeks to entice out-of-school youth and children in conflict with law (CICL) to enroll in the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System. FAMILY PLANNING MEETING IN MINDANAO

Butuan City – All officials and staff of the Commission on Population (POPCOM) in Mindanao and the agency’s central office started the two-day mid-year assessment workshop on Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RP-FP) in Agusan del Norte yesterday, August 14. This is to determine the progress of the guidelines implementation vis-à-vis targets, said Region Xlll Regional Director Alexander A. Makinano. It also aims to help individuals achieve their desired timing, spacing, and number of children and to contribute to the improvement of their Maternal Nutrition and Child Health Nutrition status. Director Makinano emphasized the importance of attaining the goals for the reduction of FP’s unmet targets– from 22 percent to 11 percent. (Mike U. Crismundo)

ADB BANK EXECS VISIT PANABO CITY

Davao City – Asian Development Bank (ADB)  President Takihiko Nakao with Country Director Richard Bolt, Director General James Nugent, and Chief Advisor Naoya Jinda recently assessed the farm-to-market road project that connects barangays Kiotoy and Mabunao in Panabo. The group also visited the bus and jeep terminals and water tower that is part of the potable water system project in the area. Residents and Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario were given the chance to share how the projects helped their families and communities and to express their gratitude for making their city ADB’s beneficiary. GUARD SHOOTS SELF IN FOOT, GETS SUSPENDED

Kidapawan City – A member of the Special Action Team (SAT) here has been slapped with a three-month suspension after he accidentally and literally shot himself in the foot in July this year. Psalmer Bernalte, head of the Kidapawan City Public Safety Office, said SAT member Homer Panara-ag’s suspension started August 11. He said this will serve as warning to other trained SAT members to handle their issued guns with care and caution.   (Malu Cadelina Manar)

FOUR HURT IN ROADSIDE BOMBING

Maguindanao – A roadside blast injured at least four yet-unidentified commuters in Barangay Sambolawan in Datu Salibo town, Maguindanao, Wednesday. Col. Dickson Hermoso, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said the suspects targeted a military truck but missed. The victims were rushed immediately to a nearby hospital for treatment. The explosion came a day after some 100 members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) attacked two military bases in barangays Magaslong and Buayan in Datu Piang here.
