Cagayan De Oro City – At least 20 towns of the four provinces in Northern Mindanao are undergoing training on Risk Map preparation, through the utilization of Geographic Information System (GIS). It is expected to help the local government units (LGUs) with their own multi-hazard and risk maps on a community level. The 19 municipalities and one city that will be capacitated in using the GIS include the Camiguin province with its towns, Catarman, Mahinog, Mambajao and Sagay; Lanao del Norte and its towns, Bacolod, Salvador and Tubod; Misamis Occidental, covering the towns of Calamba, Clarin, Plaridel, Tudela, and Oroquieta City; and Misamis Oriental, involving the towns of Alubijid, Balingasag, Lugait, Manticao, Medina, Naawan, Talisayan, and Villanueva. Malungon, Sarangani – To fulfill their mandate of supporting the National Greening Program (NGP) of the government, the 1002nd Army Brigade recently spearheaded a tree-planting activity inside their camp at Sitio Pulatana in Barangay Malandag, this town. Colonel Paterno V. Morales, 1002nd Brigade deputy commander and a representative from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office led the activity. 700 seedlings consisting of rambutan, pomelo, coffee, guyabano, jack fruit, and falcata were planted. The NGP is targeting some 1.5 million hectares of land to be planted with 1.5 billion trees from 2011 to 2016. It also aims to boost the government’s campaign on climate change adaptation and mitigation measures. (Joseph Jubelag)


Butuan City – Newly constructed classrooms were recently turned over to the Agusan Pequeno National High School by the Department of Education (DepEd) and local authorities in Barangay Pagatpatan. This project worth P1.4-million is under the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services-Community-Driven Development (Kalahi-CIDSS-CDD) Urban Pilot Project. Region-13 office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Director Minda B. Brigoli congratulated the volunteers for successfully completing the project, despite the challenges that they encountered, especially during the procurement and construction stages. Island Garden City of Samal – The Department of the Interior and Local Government of Davao Oriental headed the Regional Assessment of the expanded Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) here. The SGLG is an improved version of the Seal of Good Housekeeping introduced by former DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo in 2011. The assessment focused in the six basic elements – good financial keeping, disaster preparedness, social protection, business friendliness and competitiveness, environmental management, and peace and order. Butuan City – The Region-13 office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-13) announced the agency’s Emergency Employment Program (EEP) for the displaced wood-based workers in this city. According to DOLE Region-13 Director Johnson G. Canete, the agency is targeting 1,500 qualified workers. Those who were displaced by the total logging ban imposed by the national government through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources are qualified for EEP. “There are some requirements needed by the wood-based displaced workers to present to our agency before availing of the EEP,” stressed Canete.
