Tacloban City, Leyte (PIA) — Some 1,000 Eastern Visayas Scout members gathered recently at the Leyte Provincial Convention Center in Pawing, Palo for the 1st Eastern Visayas BSP/GSP Summit organized by the Department of Education in Region VIII along with the Boy/Girl Scouts of the Philippines under the theme “Scouting: Education for all.” Vice President Jejomar Binay, who is the National President of Boy Scouts of the Philippines, was keynote speaker. Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla was also at the event along with Valenzuela Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian.
San Jose, Antique (PIA) — The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in this province said it is ready for the barangay, and if it pushes through, the Sangguniang Kabataan elections this October. Acting COMELEC provincial election supervisor Atty. Roberto A. Salazar said the poll body here is about 90 percent complete in the printing of the computerized voters list, including that which will be posted in poll precincts through the province. Antique has 590 barangays with 328,576 total registered voters for the barangay elections, and 22,859 registered for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections although Salazar said “there is still uncertainty if the SK elections will push through.”
Ivisan, Capiz (PNA) — Some 362 residents, majority of which are out-of- school youths, graduated from a one-day computer literacy program provided by non-profit organization, Aihu Foundation, Inc. via a mobile container van parked in front of the Ivisan municipal hall building. Last Saturday’s commencement exercises were held at the town’s civic center. Dubbed Computer Van Aralan 3, Aihu chief executive Mr. Alelx Sy said the free program is in cooperation with the Technical Education and Skills Authority, Rotary Club of Metro Iloilo and the Ivisan local government. He said a total of 34,253 students have already benefited from the same computer literacy program nationwide.
Cebu City, Cebu (PIA) — Around 300 Catholic nurses convened Saturday at the JSU-PSU Mariners Court, ALU Compound, Arellano St., this city, to tackle issues and concerns related to the Catholic faith and caring during their 2nd Local Convention themed “Nurses: Witnesses of Faith towards Compassionate Care.”The event was organized by the Catholic Nurses Guild of the Philippines (CNGP) Cebu Chapter led by its president, Dr. Carmelita Villanobos. Former Professional Regulations Commission Region-7 Regional Director and CNGP Board Member Dr. Delia Z. Mediano delivered a talk on the convention theme and Fr. Loreto Jarque of the Cebu’s Archbishop Palace spoke about “finding sacredness and meaning in one’s work.”
Maasin City, Southern Leyte (PIA) — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) through the Maasin City Jail (MCJ) will hold the 1st Friendship Games between MCJ personnel and inmates and Southern Leyte Provincial Jail personnel and their inmates at the Southern Leyte Provincial Jail grounds on September 30. BJMP Maasin City Jail Wardress Senior Inspector Arlene T. Barraca said the games are in observance of the National Correctional Consciousness (NACOCO) Week on Oct. 21-27, 2013.
