More irrigation projects up in Caraga in 2014
BUTUAN CITY – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA-13) is set to open at least 5,000 hectares of lands for multi-million projects at various areas in the five provinces in the region.
The bulk of these irrigation construction projects will be in the 2nd District of Agusan del Sur where at least 788 hectares is set to open with 379 hectares set for rehabilitation.
The 1st District will also open some 314 hectares for irrigation. Agusan del Sur province is considered as the rice granary province in the Caraga region.
The regional office of NIA here is also set to open some 554 hectares for irrigation projects in the 2nd District of Surigao del Sur province while another 224 hectares will be set to open in the 1st District, also of this province with 17 hectares set for rehabilitation.
In Surigao del Norte province, at least 134 hectares for the 1st District and 451 hectares in the 2nd district are set to open for the construction of irrigation projects, with 22 hectares for rehabilitation.
In Agusan del Norte, at least 283 hectares for the 1st district and 163 hectares for the 2nd Districts are also set to open for the construction of irrigation projects.
In Dinagat Islands province, the NIA-13 regional office is also set to open some 119 hectares for the construction of irrigation projects.
The over-all total amount set for the construction of these irrigation projects reached up to more than P600 million.
“All these big irrigation construction projects/facilities are being programmed for 2014,” said region’s top NIA official Engr. Encarnacion Simangan Soriano.
The NIA-13 regional director also said some that are set for rehabilitation are those damaged by typhoons ‘Sendong’ and ‘Pablo’ that hit Northern Mindanao in 2011 and 2012.
