Saint Pius V Feast Today

The Catholic Church honors today the memory of Saint Pius V, the initiator of the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Saint Pius V, who was pope from 1566 to 1572, was believed to be instrumental in obtaining the victory of the Battle of Lepanto, fought off the coast of Greece on Oct. 7, 1571 against the Turks. The Muslims, who were out to conquer the whole Christian world, were believed to have been defeated miraculously through the intercession of the Blessed Mother. Born in 1504 in Basco, Italy, St. Pius was ordained a Dominican priest in 1528, elected bishop in 1556, and cardinal in 1557. During his Pontificate, the new breviary, missal, and catechism were published. He was canonized on May 24, 1712 by Pope Clement XI. (Christina I. Hermoso)

Register Early

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is urging voters not to wait for the last minute before registering for the May 2016 polls. “It is the responsibility of registrants to register as early as possible and to avoid last-minute registration,” Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said. “With the opening of the poll registration, we encourage all unregistered qualified voters to register and exercise their right to vote.” The resumption of the voters’ registration system will start on May 6, 2014 to October 31, 2015. Meanwhile, the Comelec issued Resolution No. 9863 directing all Office of the Election Officers to post a certified list of registered voters slated to be delisted in the 2016 polls still without biometrics data or who failed to vote in the two preceding regular elections.
