National Newsbits for August 8, 2014

Today is the feast day of Saint Dominic (Santo Domingo), the founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and the initiator of the beautiful prayer of the Holy Rosary. A feast mass was celebrated in his honor last Sunday, August 3, by Fr. Ramon Salibay, O.P., parish priest of the Santo Domingo Church (National Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary) on Quezon Avenue, Quezon City. A solemn procession followed the mass. Commemorative rites will be observed today by the Prelature of Batanes Babuyanes, the civil province of Batanes and the Babuyan Island group; and the Diocese of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. Saint Dominic is the patron of astronomers and the Dominican Republic. (Christina I. Hermoso)

The Sandiganbayan is allowing Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to undergo voter registration. However, the Sandiganbayan First Division did not allow Arroyo to leave the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) where she is currently under hospital arrest. Instead, the court ordered Pampanga Election Officer Leonilo Paule Miguel, or any or his duly authorized representatives, “to cause the voter-list reactivation and biometrics validation of accused Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo” at the VMMC not later than October 15. The court acted on the motion filed by Arroyo’s lawyers who said the former president has received a notice from the election officer of Lubao that her name was being deactivated as a registered voter for failing to vote in her province in the past two elections.
