FEAST OF SAINT PETER DAMIANI

The Catholic Church commemorates today the Feast of Saint Peter Damiani (San Pedro Damian), a popular Italian bishop and a Doctor of the Universal Church. Masses and novenas will be held in several Catholic churches in many parts of the world in honor of the venerated Benedictine monk. Known for his spiritual writings and excellent knowledge of the Sacred Scriptures, St. Peter led a life of prayer, penance, fasting, and service to the poor. He fostered among his followers the spirit of solitude, charity, and humility. Born in Ravenna, Italy in 1007, St. Peter was a revered predecessor of St. Francis of Assisi. He served as abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Italy. After his appointment as cardinal and bishop by Pope Stephen IX in 1057, he worked zealously for the reform of the Church and in defense of the faith until the time of his death in 1072. In 1828, Pope Leo XII extended his feast to the Universal Church and declared him a Doctor of the Church. (Christina I. Hermoso)
