The Catholic Church pays tribute today to the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church, who gave up their lives while standing by their faith at a time of intense Christian persecution. Pope Clement I, an early Church father said, “The blood of the first martyrs, Christians martyred in the city of Rome during Emperor Nero’s persecution in 64 A.D., has always been and will always be, the seed of Christianity.” Also known as the “protomartyrs of Rome,” they were persecuted, tortured, and killed in August 64 A.D. upon the orders of Emperor Nero. The Christian martyrs included the pillars of the Catholic Church, Saints Peter and Paul. (Christina I. Hermoso)

The Manila City Regional Trial Court (RTC) should proceed with the trial of the murder case field against 10 Philippine Navy officers and enlisted personnel linked to the death of Ensign Philip Andrew Pestano, the Court of Appeals (CA) has ruled. At the same time, the CA affirmed the February 26, 2014 order issued by Manila Branch 55 Presiding Judge Josefina Siscar directing the transfer of the accused navy officers from military custody to the Manila City Jail. In a six-page resolution penned by Associate Justice Ramon M. Bato Jr., the appellate court denied the petition filed by the accused seeking the reversal of the Manila RTC order and the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) to enjoin their transfer to the city jail.
